Visiting All Souls

What is a typical Sunday like?
  • Service Times: 10 am (Traditional Unitarian Universalist) and 11:30 am (The Point Humanist Hour).
  • Before Service: Visit the welcome table for name tags and info. Enjoy free beverages and snacks in Emerson Hall.
  • After Service: First-time visitors can attend a reception in Sonen Library to meet ministers and staff.
  • Special Services: Occasionally, services may be combined. Check the calendar for updates.
What is the difference between the two services?
  • 10 am Unitarian Universalist Service: Traditional elements like hymns, readings, prayers, and a sermon, focusing on spiritual themes.
  • 11:30 am The Point Humanist Hour: Non-religious, community-focused, exploring life’s big questions without theistic beliefs.

What is Wednesday Community Connections (WCC)?
Wednesday Community Connections is a fun evening of activities including dinner, chapel service, and classes. Dinner costs $5 per person, with options for higher contributions. Classes are free or donation-based, and are offered on a rotating basis at various times throughout the year.

Families, Children & Youth

Is childcare available?
  • Childcare is available on Sunday mornings, Wednesday evenings and for some special events and programs.
  • On Sundays, childcare is available for toddlers through pre-K. Children in kindergarten and above attend Religious Exploration classes.
  • There is no charge for childcare during church-sponsored events, however we do expect parents to share of their time and talents by volunteering with our Children's and Youth programs.
Can I volunteer in my child's classroom?
Absolutely! For the safety of our young people, all volunteers must be members for at least one year, and must undergo a background check. Schedules and opportunities are flexible.

Social Justice

What social justice initiatives is All Souls involved in?
We participate in initiatives including racial identity work, LGBTQ+ and women's rights, environmental justice, support for public education, voter engagement, food insecurity and more.

Membership

Do I have to believe in a specific doctrine?
No, we embrace diverse beliefs and focus on radical acceptance and inclusiveness.
Can anyone become a member?
Yes. We welcome everyone, regardless of race, culture, economic status, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
  • Youth must have reached age 16, or age 14 for Coming of Age participants, before committing to membership.

We offer various rooms for rent with rates depending on your membership status.

Must a minister be present for celebrations of life?
Broadly speaking, yes, but there are exceptions. In order to ensure we are providing the best support possible, celebrations of life must be discussed with a minister before booking a room rental.

How do I plan a life event at All Souls?
Our Life Events Coordinator is eager to assist with weddings, memorials, child dedications and other life events. Because each event is unique, we will work with you directly to determine how to best support your needs.

Giving

What is the difference between the plate offering and the operating fund?
The operating fund supports the church's day-to-day operations. The plate offering supports community programs and organizations. 
Who determines the recipient of the weekly plate offering ?
  • The recipient of the weekly plate offering is determined in part by the Generosity Committee, comprised of three church members. Final determination is made by the worship team.
  • Anyone may apply to be a recipient. The Generosity Committee will research all applicants, and submit the committee's recommendations to the worship team.

Pastoral care is the name for the loving care we offer our members when life is hard. There are times in everyone’s life when they need a little extra care and support.

Miscellaneous Questions & Answers

Where can I find coffee and refreshments?
Complimentary coffee, water and tea are available in Emerson Hall every Sunday. Our youth sponsor a “Brunch for Boston” table in Emerson Hall, where tasty bites are available for a donation in support of their annual trip to Boston, as part of our Coming of Age program. From time to time, special treats may be available during programs and other events—or just for fun!
Will there be vegetarian/vegan options at (event)?
A vegetarian option is offered at all church-sponsored events. We make every effort to provide vegan options, but this is not always possible. Please call the church office to confirm whether a vegan option will be available for a given event.
Is All Souls 2SLGBTQIA+ affirming?
Yes! We invite you to bring your whole self to All Souls. We affirm your chosen name and pronouns and provide a safe place to share in our community with your chosen partner(s).
Can I use the restroom that aligns with my gender identity?
Absolutely. Please use the restroom that best aligns with your gender identity.
Where are the restrooms?
  • There are multi-stall gendered restrooms on the ground floor behind the sanctuary, and near the chapel, and on the second floor hallway.
  • There are single stall restrooms on by the choir room on the ground floor, to the west of the President’s room on the lower floor, and beside room 207 on the second floor.
Is there security on site?
Plain-clothes security is present during Sunday services and special events. We are monitoring the safety and security of our congregation on an ongoing basis, and Our Health, Safety, and Security team is in the process of securing a grant in order to make further improvements.
