Unitarian Universalist youth experience Coming of Age as a rite of passage from childhood onto the path toward becoming an adult. Rather than a creed-based religion, in which religious beliefs are prescribed by an external source, ours is a belief founded on and rooted in individual religious authority. Instead of reading or reciting excerpts from ancient texts, our young people speak the truth from their hearts on Coming of Age Sunday in the spring.
Boston Pilgrimage
Each year during Spring Break, the Coming of Age class makes its annual pilgrimage to Boston, the Unitarian City. Our youth visit Arlington Street Church, King's Chapel, Walden Pond, Harvard Divinity School and many other famous Unitarian Universalist sites. While in Boston, they compose credos of their beliefs, which they deliver to the congregation on Coming of Age Sunday.
Coming of Age Sunday
As Unitarian Universalists, we give our youth the power and responsibility of sharing with us what they believe. Having spent the year learning to identify their values, understand their beliefs and learn more about themselves, the Coming of Age class culminates in the youth delivering their credo—their own, personal statement of belief that they want to share with the world.
