When Universalism first came to North America, the early ideas about God and Heaven were quite different from how we might think of these concepts today. Yet the primary principle of the ultimate triumph of love remains compelling.
As Rev. Nancy McDonald Ladd wrote in the book,
“Love at the Center,”
Universalism was sometimes called “The Gospel of God’s Success,” and it was so fundamentally not about us that Rev. Gordon McKeeman later characterized it this way:
“The image was that the last unrepentant sinner would be dragged kicking and screaming into heaven, unable, at last, to resist the power and love of the Almighty.”
Most, at All Souls today, do not think in terms of
“sin” and a God who is needed to redeem sin. Yet, there is an overwhelming sense of love’s power to heal and to transform the world.
Join Rev. Marlin as he explores the idea of a “Love That Will Not Fail.” Let us take seriously our role as stewards of a Universalism for our times.
